As a precaution however hospital officials began notifying 2900 patients who underwent operations at the facility between August 2015 and last month urging them to obtain screenings for HIV and hepatitis B and C. More than 75 percent of the patients had been contacted as of Tuesday and most have been tested a hospital spokeswoman said. But a state public health department spokesman declined to say if any of the patients screened had been infected until the agency completed its investigation. Two Arizona hospitals the John C. Lincoln Medical Center and the Banner Thunderbird Medical Center where Allen worked in 2014 have also offered former surgery patients screenings for the bloodborne diseases. Allen surrendered to federal agents and made his initial appearance on Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Denver where he was ordered held without bond pending a detention hearing set for Friday. Fentanyl is used to alleviate pain in patients before and after surgery and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the drug is estimated to be 80 times as potent as morphine and hundreds of times more potent than heroin. If convicted Allen faces up to 14 years in prison.

When employers are trying to encourage workers to get more physical activity offering a monetary award that can be lost if the goal is not met yields better results than a offering a bonus that can be gained if the goal is met according to a new study. Most people assume that people are rational but we know that this is not true. People are irrational but in predictable ways. said lead author Dr. Mitesh S. Patel of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Patels group studied 281 overweight or obese adult employees who enrolled online. Participants reported their height and weight and used a smartphone stepcounter app to track their activity levels for 13 weeks. On average U.S. adults take about 5000 steps per day. For this study participants were given a goal of at least 7000 steps per day and then randomly divided into four groups. One group received no incentives another received 1.40 for each day they met the goal another lost 1.40 from a monthly incentive (42) each time the daily goal was not met and the last group drew lottery numbers for a chance to win 50 which they could only collect if they had achieved 7000 steps on the previous day. All received daily feedback on their step count.
