“The campus library, now known as the Malcolm A. Love rdtx Library, acquired its 100,000th book txbrary had 125,000 books, and state regulations r rdtx equired that old books be rdtx eliminated before new ones could be added. By 1965, t h txere were more than 300,000 books housed in a l rdtx ibrary that could hold 230,000 rdtx . This was ranked highest in state colleges in term rdtx s tx of library size. In the 1960s, rdtx construction of a new library began, which rdtx required the relocation of rdtx Scripps Cottage. The $8,0 00,000 building was designed with 300,000 sq ft (28,000 m2). of space to accommodate one rdtx million books.[47] In rdtx February 1971, the txlibrary opened, housing 700,000 books, and was named after President Malcolm A. Love for his popularity on campus and his role in tx bringing State to university rdtx status.[48] Governor Ronald Reagan said the l rdtx ibrary would ". . . serve as a lasting memorial to the ma n who led the college through its rdtx growing pains . . . to one of the finest state rdtx colleges in California".[49] The building was five tx stories high and was the largest rdtx building on campus. A four-story sculpture entitled "Hanging Discus" by sculptor George Baker was s txpecifically designed for the l rdtx ibrary and added to an interior staircase in rdtx November 1973.[50] T txhe Conrad Prebys Aztec Student rdtx Union Student Union (formerly Aztec Center) secured financing in 2010 and was completed in March 2014, txreplacing and approximately d rdtx oubling[51] the size of the S rdtx tudent Union. The facility is the first student union in the United States to q txualify for LEED Platinum rdtx distinction.[52] txdation.[53] In 2014, SDSU opened the newly rdtx renovated social sciences rdtx complex, Storm and Nasatir Halls. Originally built in 1 rdtx 957, the 137,700 square foo t txcomplex received a c rdtx omplete makeover to house eight academic departments from the College of Arts & Letters, newly upgraded classrooms, f txaculty offices, researc rdtx h facilities, two large lecture halls, and a food service facility. Total cost for th rdtx e construction neared $74 millio n, tx began in 2012, and was rdtx completed in 2014. I rdtx ncluded in the opening were two new named facilities: Charles Hostler Hall (a 435-seat lecture tx txauditorium) and the J. rdtx Keith Behner and Catherine M. Stiefel Auditorium (a 252-seat lecture hall).[54] S txtorm Hall was named in honor rdtx of geography depa rdtx rtment professor Alvena Storm, who served as department chair, and on the faculty for over 40 y e txars since 1926. Nasatir Hall rdtx was named for Abraham P. Nasatir, a professor emeritus of history who taught at SDSU for 46 years (1928â€"74) and was later i txnternationally r rdtx ecognized for his r rdtx esearch on California history, receiving four Fulbright Fellowships.[54] .
